Dave,

I have read your book some years back and really enjoyed getting the inside scoop on the corvette ups and downs over the years. I have owned 4 vettes and have a love afair with the zr1 and have a copy, original of course of the 1990 vette zr1 with your inner group of engineers. I watch it often and each time come away with more refined info about the vette and the people behind it. You have done a wonderful job and have inspired the many in vette land. Thanks Dave.

The architect for the office and garage was Geoffrey Childs. Geoffrey trained with John Howe for 13 years and was recommended to us by Mrs. Howe. Geoffrey is practicing in Lincoln, NE.

Of particular importance to us was to add these new spaces without visually overwhelming the house. Thus the garage is separated from the house by the entry courtyard and the office is below the garage opening onto a west exposure hillside.

Many years ago I was fortunate to meet Mr. and Mrs. Howe and get a chance to visit at their home "Woodhome" up in Burnsville, Minnesota. At the time I was given a booklet by Mr. Howe published by Nihon University listing his projects. I found in the listing several projects he designed in Michigan of which yours was one. Living all my life in south east Michigan and enjoying the work of FLLW, I have always wanted to know more about the home and utility building that he designed for you. With your posting you have helped fill a long standing wish of mine to know more about the house 'Jack' Howe built for David R. McLellan in 1969 and 1970.

If you choose to post additional information on your site about your fantastic home, please show a few pictures of the utility building. It would also be very interesting to know more about any concerns Mr. Howe had when you told him that you were going to build on a different site after you had your building plans.

Again, thank-you for posting for architectural fans like me.

Dave,
What a beautiful home you and Glenda have created. From some angles, it reminds me of the Glore home in Lake Forest, IL designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in the 1950's. Mr. Howe may have had a hand in the design and/or drawings of the Glore home for Mr. Wright.

Could you post the full name of the man who helped with your addition? Jeffrey -? You mentioned he apprenticed with Mr. Howe.

Thank-you for sharing the story and pictures of your home.

Hello Mr. McLellan:
I became a Frank Lloyd Wright fan while taking my first course in Drafting, my freshman year in High School - 1959. My Drafting teacher had sketches of Wright's homes on all the walls of the classroom.

Through High School and into college I wanted to be an Architect, however I quickly realized I had no artistic ability compared to several of my fellow students. So I settled on Engineering.

I greatly admire not only the beautiful home that Mr. Howe designed for you and your wife, but your dedication to completing it "as designed".

kind regards,
Carl

Dave,
Thanks so much for the pod cast of the 1995 Steamboat discussion with John, Rosie, Zora and yourself. I had never seen that, and it was fascinating to watch and listen to these giants of Corvette history! Thank you so very much, it was most enjoyable

Many memories were brought back while watching your clip on the 1957 S.S. corvette.
I was present at that race in 1957.
I drove to the race in a 1956 Corvette from Atlanta Georgia.
At the time I was interested in drag racing only and that race was my introduction to sports car racing. Needless to say I fell in love with the S.S.
I also Filmed the S.S. Corvette (8 mm film) at the first Daytona speedway race in 1958. Duntov was running the car for exibition,
I only filmed a brief moment as it sped by at an unbelievable 150 mph. Stockcars were running about 135 as I recall.
I put the clip in my favorites so I can stay up with your web page.
Thanks again.

Dave: I was able to read your book back in 2003, right after I had purchased my 1999 C-5. I highly recommend this book to all Corvette owners as it approaches the topic with an insight that is rational and thorough. It was a joy to read.

Hi Dave - I have this record, which was included as a supplement in an early edition of Corvette News. I do not believe it was distributed then in any other way. Jim Prather of Vette Vues fame had a tape of it available some time ago.

I enjoyed listening to it, as it was the first time I have had that pleasure. My record has never been played, as I do not want to damage it.I have experienced some of this first hand, in my '63 FI Coupe and my '64 FI Tanker with a 3:08 rear gear that does an easy 95mph in second gear with a little left.

Hi Dave,

Just found your blog, and this recording brings back memories of listening to it during my childhood. My dad had a cassette recording of this record, and his first Corvette was a new 1961 315hp FI. In 1963, he traded it for a 1964 327/365 Convertible, which he still owns, but he still speaks very highly of the 1961, which he ultimately believes was faster. It had all the "racing" options.

Dave, I remember a dealer audio tape in the late 60s with Zora test driving a corvette at GM proving grounds, wouldn't this be nice on your web sight?? Have been at Bowling Green and the Museum in 1985 & 1987, must go back again soon. Larry,( my best friend) one of the first Classic Corvette Club members which grew into the NCRS later, had heavy influence on me in the early 70s I have always been a corvette nut ever since and am glad to report that I have a 66 L79 ragtop to this date and I absolutely love to drive it. I find your podcast interesting an informative. My brother just bought a new CR6, I will take him to Bowling Green when I go again.Thanks...Jim Moreland

Dave I hope GM can find a way out of it present financial problems so I can buy another new Corvette, number 12, when the C-7 arrives. The plant tour is something that every Corvette owner and Corvette enthusiast should do along with a vist the the National Corvette Museum.

What a beautiful environment to live in every day!

I appreciate the angular shapes of the rooms in your home. Years ago, I worked in a building that was crescent shaped. It was built in a series of 10 degree segments. The building was very large but always had a warmer feel than a typical large office building because it did not have 90 degree angles in the office floor plans.

Thank you for sharing with us.

Really enjoyed the tour of your home - such a beautiful environment to live and work in! I really hope I'm able to build a house someday - same idea, but a little more arts and crafts style. I love all of the furniture built for the house also. It sounded like you built it yourself which is amazing. I had a great time watching - and only because Cliff put this on facebook, otherwise would have never found it, not being a Corvette aficionado! Thanks!

I first drove a Corvette in 1964, as a car jockey at a local Chevy Dealer. It took 36 yrs before I drove another ...my own Vette! I would have given my eye teeth to have been involved in the development of this sports car. Dave, your insights and expertise brought the Corvette full circle. We all owe you a debt of gratitude! I love this website!!

Dave, Great website! Do you have contact information for Jeffrey Yachnin? I need to contact Jeff regarding Sam Sim's retirement party. Do you remember Sam Sims? If so do you have any "fond" memories to share. Sam's retirement party is on August 29, 2008. Please advise. Your old pal, Dorian Tyree, the Corvette Safety-Crashworthiness Engineer.

Dave,

Friends of my parents had a 58' and gave me their promotional copy of this when they received it. I was thrilled. I played it until it wore out and have been looking for another copy ever since. The origional promotional record they received was a pressing on a square piece of very thin flexible white plastic sheeting. I believe I have since heard portions of this recording used in vintage Hollywood car chase scenes, thanks to resourceful studio effects mixers in Burbank . Thank you very much for making this available on your Website.

Very enjoyable to watch. Thanks for posting it. Interesting how safety has changed, with the course being marked with hay bales and pylons, with spectators just feet away from the cars.

We have never met Dave Ferguson in person, but he has been our mentor. I purchased a 54' Corvette about a year ago. He has been so helpful in answering our questions on what is correct (or not) on my car. He is so kind and we feel so fortunate to have him as our friend. He is a wonderful addition to NCRS. We hope to meet him in person one day. Thank you for this podcast.

I enjoyed your talk with Reeves Callaway. Ask him if he remembers racing with me in the Connecticut Valley Region Porsche Club events of the early 1970s. Interestingly enough, I ended up at GE Aircraft Engines flight test, and worked on some of the same projects Dave Fergueson worked on. My final connection with the corvette is my current friendship with Rodger Johnson, an ex-corvette chassis engineer. He turned me on to this website. I really enjoyed your discussion of high performance road racing corvettes, past, present and future. Thank you.

Dave, Thanks for sharing this podcast. I have been a long time Corvette enthusiast and really enjoyed seeing the actual video of the 1957 Sebring race. That certainly was an exciting time for Corvette. Very interesting to see the early drivers and Zora so passionate about the car and its future. Looking forward to your next piodcast. Best Regards, Tom

Anytime, any place a vehicle dynamics engineer gets a chance to talk to or listen to Bill Milliken, it is a pleasure and honor. I've know Bill for more years than I want to remember (almost 40) and he's basically the guy I'd like to model myself after. Great podcast! Really enjoyed Bill's stories as well as all of his books - Dan Metz

Hi Dave
Keep up the good work on interviewing Corvette racers of days gone by. They all have a special story to tell that needs to be captured.

Zora's drive in the Corvette reminds me of the time of our first meeting when I drove Zora in my 63 and Brian drove your charming wife in the Fun-Fest parade. Zora's first words in my Vette were, "ehhhhhhh, high perrrrformance" as he checked out the tach. What a treat for both myself and my son. Thanks for the memories.

Dave....being a Corvette fanatic for about 50 years, I really love what you are doing with respect to these podcasts....you are doing an awesome job with them. I really appreciate you making the effort to bring this great information to the public. The Corvette along with the "people of Corvette" is simply fascinating and intriqueing....I love the history and personalites of the Corvette...and can't get enough of it . The Sebring podcast was simply awesome....seeing actual video of the '57 Corvette along with the SS from 51 years ago is a dream come true for a Corvette enthusatic....please keep them coming.

Regards and Thanks!

Dave,
Thanks for this interview with John. He is such a gentleman and an encyclopedia of early racing information. I had the pleasure of having a few meals with him when we were all at the Precision Valley Corvette Museum for your book signing tour in 2002. (see link http://www.corvettesconquercancer.com/pvcm.htm)
His hearing is pretty bad, and at one point he told me why. I assumed that it was the result of years of driving race cars. Actually, it happened when he was a POW in Germany in WWII after being shot down. A bunch of prisoners were housed in boxcars, and from the inside the percussion of the nearby allied bombing was what cost him his hearing!
I always enjoy seeing him at Lime Rock, where he was the first track manager when it got started back in the 50s.
Thanks again for this interview, Dave.

Dave, I really appreciate your site and the insight you bring to us. My initial reaction to this interview was that it was dull and lacked meat. The guest drifted too often from the questions you asked making it hard to follow, BUT then I quickly remembered John Fitch's age. I doubt few his age could equal his mental capacity. After that I feasted on his every word and what a treasure his comments were. I am very greatful to you for the interview and to Mr. Finch for sharing his role in Corvette history. I had lust in my heart from the first moment I saw the "town rich kid" (Elgin Ill) driving down the main street in the late spring of 1954, in what I felt the most beautiful white 2 seat sports car I'd ever seen. I knew then I must have one... at least someday which finally came 18 years later! Thanks again, Bill

You asked about the value of the Sounds of Corvette record. I have no idea what its value is but if you go to Ebay and try to but it you'll find out.

Dave,
The conversationwith Dick Gulstrand is what us Corvette guys want. Our history is irreplacible, and the conversation with one of our founders, is what I crave. I was born into the So Cal car enviro and drove the early Vettes. I suffered through the early racing years, and as the Porsches noted "you will break in the first two hours, and we will lead you to the finish." I sat in the Riverside Raceway esses, in the dirt, and they were right. We would crash and burn and they would crow about their prowess. I have now lived long enough to appreciate the latest surge and Chevy's participation. I just witnessed the LBGP and saw that there is little competition to the thunderous GT1 Corvettes. I think your interview with Gulstrand was right on and I can only hope that you continue with interviews with the guys that built our legend until Chevy ultimately decided to join in our quest to "Save the the wave".
A conversation with Reeves calloway is now demanded. I sat in the audience as he tried to carry on the greatness at Le Mans in '94 with little help from GM. His effort helped sail my ship, and I'm certain many others.

Keep up the great effort. And, by the way, your signature on my 92 ZR-1 is as proud today as the day you signed it.

met you both in the past, even had lunch with Dick. But was a little dissapointed, that you did not mention the Dutch Corvette Club ( +500 members)!
And I am a founding-, lifetime-member and Ambassador for the NCM! Many US-"hardcore" Vettelovers cannn't beat that!

I'm so glad I found your new site! What a hoot hearing you and Dick - I haven't seen him in years and it was great knowing that he's still doing well. The tales he told about the old vettes were stories I never heard before.

I've passed on the news about this site to all of my car enthusiast friends.

Hi,Dave
I enjoyed the podcast and will look forward to returning for more info on the Great American Sports Car.I do favor the idea of a mid-engine concept coming to the Corvette line. I owned a '89 and then the kid came, followed by an increasing waistline, and the Vette went. Now the kid is going out on her own and I'm poised for the car to return.Happily, with the new "tub" and lower sill,I've found I can again enter/exit the car comfortably. I found your site through Ugur Sahin Design, and would love to see their interpretation of the Vette in mid-engine format. I'll be shopping Z06's and U-S-D's to see if they are within reach. Thanks again for the pods and sharing your knowledge with us. Looking forward to re-joining the ranks!

Enjoyed hearing the thoughts of an old racer like Dick Guldstrand. At his age he's got nothing to prove to anyone, so I truly believed his comments about the LT5 being the BEST engine GM ever produced and the NEED to get out of the rut and start designing ceramic engines. Damn the cost!

Dave, thank you for your efforts.

Dear Dave,
Enjoyed the discussion with Dick Guidstrand.
Don't know what your podcast itenerary is, but corvettes are about racing, and is there any chance you could talk about setting the FIA Endurance Record with the ZR-1.
I enjoyed reading about the event in your book, and I would like to hear you elaborate about the event.
Thanks.

Dave,

The 58-62 model years represents my favorite of style and performance for the corvette. It is something with the simplistic and pure genius of corvette and Zora's work. The days of my childhood riding in my fathers 58 all comes back listing to this recording. Thank you for retuning timed memories.

A mid-engine Vette would be interesting. I own a 1988 Pontiac Fiero GT, it is a great car (could use more hp though).

I've noticed that the C5 spaceframe looks very similar in design to the spaceframe on my Fiero, was the Fiero design used as a benchmark for the C5 spaceframe?

Also, did Chevy ever seriously consider building the mid-engine Chevy Tandem concept car?

Lastly, wouldnt the XLR production line be the perfect place to build a mid-engine vette and Cadillac Cien, while maintaining the traditional front engine vette on the main line?

Dave, Thanks for the memories. Zora really was instrumental in developing the early Corvettes. Thanks for picking up where he left off and elevating the Corvette to the great car that it is today. Tom

Dave - You are a gift to all Corvette enthusiasts. Thanks for your continuing support and belief in the Corvette. My 94 ZR1 is an amazing car even with 100,000 plus miles on it. It has received a bunch of TLC to get it back to and beyond its new performance. Thanks again for sharing. I especially liked hearing Zora. Doug PS I am a goofball than has three and want more.

Dave,
Thanks for making this great recording available. For about 30 years I have had a very tired cassette copy of a copy of a copy of the original record, so it is great to hear it in its original quality. It has always produced goose bumps from the first hearing, and they just keep getting better!
Ben
btw, I will be seeing the new ZR1 in Attleboro, MA on March 29. Designer Kirk Bennion will be giving 2 hour presentations on the car for small groups throughout the day. See link:

Dave,
I enjoyed your podcast, this is a great idea, and I will tell my NCRS friends to tune in and also enjoy.

I have a 93 Ruby ZR-1 that is going thru the NCRS system. I anticipate I will be going for your namesake award in 2009 in San Jose, Ca. I hope you will be their to place some kind of memento on the underside of the hood or on top of the engine. God willing, and the creek don't rise. Thanks for all your great ideas and passion of our beloved Corvettes.

Its cold, its snowing and its time for some kind of up lift. Living in the northeast makes for a long winter especially when I have an 2002 / C5 sitting in its own heated garage. My love started when in 1953 you people came out with the vette. I was 13 years old at that time, and 50 years later my dream finally came true. Hearing the 61 again brought a joy to my heart. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you.

Dave
Thank you for starting this podcast. Sure brightens up a cold winters day listening to the chevy engine. I have read your book three times and still learn something new each time. I have a 95 with the LT1, and hope to purchase a ZR1 this year. Of all the Corvette eras, I love the C4 the best. I will be waiting for your next podcast. Thanks again.

Thanks for the website, really brings back memories. I have been a loyal Vette owner for the past 47 years, the first vette was a 61 315 fuelie which I took delevery on in November of 1960. She was black with silver coves and red interior. I received the little plastic record with the car which somehow over the years has disappeared.Hearing it again brought tears to my eyes. Since the 61 I have owned a 63 split window, 66 big block 425hp roadster, 78 pace car, 91convertible and now my trusty 99 c5 hardtop. keep the articles coming.

Dave,

Thanks for your many years of devotion to Corvette and, now, for your involvment in this website.

Driving my desk in this little burg between Chicago and Milwaukee took on a whole new excitement as I listened to Zora go through the gears in a '61.

Waiting for Spring!

It is 17 degrees outside and snowing. You can't believe the joy the sound of the 61 Vette brings.

Can not wait til spring and being able to drive my ZO6

Thank you Dave for setting up this site. I know you have many stories about the CORVETTE AND ZORA that we will be waiting to hear. Keep them coming. The sound of that 315 HP 283 FI engine was great.

Thank you Dave for the site and the recording of Zora Duntov in 1960. I was 16 then, car crazy about Vettes and remember a neighbor who had a 1961 that he would put through the gears past our house just like on the Zora recording. Those solid lifter Chevy small blocks are still exciting to hear, they seem to wind up forever. Great site. Lyle

Dave,
just great to listen to Zora for the very first
time with his funny european accent!
And the way he was driving that '61 Corvette and
even powersliding it through the curves, hearing
the tires sqeal under the power, awesome!
Zora, always the racer!
Thank you for the memories.

Dave,

I enjoyed your thoughts on mid-engine Corvette history. Keep it up. Remember the twin engine Corvette that we built in Jack Turner's shop with two 4.3 liter V6 engines? That certainly was a fun project albeit not a very practical concept.

Hi Dave,
loved every minute of your mid-egine story!
GM should have the gutts to finally built a mid-egined, four-wheel-drive & double-clutch auto-shift Corvette C7!!!
At the moment, I am driving a Golf IV 3.2 DSG-Autmatic 300HP 4WD and have great fun driving
this piece of technical art-in-motion!
GM should built a same revolutionary Vette!

Keep those great Corvette stories coming!

Thanx, Han Klems from Overseas.

Ps: say: hello to Glaida & still treasure your signed

Dave -

Great internet initiative. I look forward to more of your wisdom. Corvette people will always appreciate your insights. Let's talk more about the mid-engine car as I had some influence over that decision with C5. Your insights and direction were instrumental in making C5 the "best Vette yet" at its launch.

Give my love to Glenda.

One can make a case either way. The Corvair, though, should not be looked to for direction. It was a rear engined car and before 1964 was little more than an overgrown VW Beetle. Check out the reference to the mid-engined Mosler MT900 in my book. Here you'll see the profound opportunity that exists to keep Corvette at or ahead of World Class.

Dave, leave it alone.....Being a owner of a 63 Corvair I would not put the motor anywhere than where it is..they were proven an unsafe car and they don't have the proformance that a Corvette has. Just too dangerous. I have two Corvettes a 427 and 454 and no way would I want the motor anywhere but in the front. More protection for you.

Dave, Thanks for your thoughts on the mid engine Corvette. Asyou evaluate the new CAFE regulations and their likely impact on subsequent Corvettes, how would you rank the challenges of sustaining or improving performance to satisfy customer demand, with the need to decrease weight? How extensively do you see high strength carbon fiber components entering the structure of the car as opposed to the skin? Can you see a future engine program with much smaller displacement but very high RPM's like the Ferrari and if so, how do you think Corvette's current customer base would react to the required driving style changes?
I look forward to your next podcast. OBTW, I've enjoyed all 4 of my C-4's and thank you for them. Without a doubtr the ZR-1 was the best.

Dave,

This is great. I love it. You have an opportunity here to give us the real Corvette history. We've been the victims of so many myths and PR guys that the real history has been lost. I would love to know more about how, and why, your group did certain things in developing the Corvette.

Many young people, when asked who they look up to, will list off the names of celebrities such as t.v. and movie stars or great athletes. As an aspiring Corvette owner growing up (I'm now 34) in the C4 era, I read about everything "Corvette" I could get my hands on. I read about people like Dave McLellan, Jerry Palmer, John Cafaro, John Heinricy, Jim Ingles, Fred Schaafsma, Doug Robinson, Tommy Morrison and many others who turned the Corvette into the world class sports car it is. These were and are the people I really admired.

With a lot of work, I got my low mile '85 in 1990 and in 2001, bought my all time dream car, the ZR-1. This is surely a longer comment than this site is looking for, but all I can think of at the moment to say is "Thank you Dave". I look forward to meeting you someday.

As for a mid-engined Corvette, I think that if the increased performance trend continues at the rate it has been, even with tighter CAFE standards on the horizon, then a mid-engined car and even 4 wheel drive will be the focus of more attention by the Corvette team - especially in getting that increased power to the pavement.

Dave, I purchased mt first Corvette as you were taking the helm from Zora in 75. Fram an engineering standpoint a mid engined Corvette is something that should be done. Fram the Corvair up to the Fiero, some have tried but it always seems that the accounts won out in the end and the true "car guys" such as yourself would hev to go on to other projects. It is one of the unfortunate facts of the industry. We can now only hope, wait, and see.

I always admired the courage of the people involved with the ZR-1 project.
It will be great to read your insights
as, the Brittish say, "from the horse's mouth.
Good luck and maybe later I'll tell you how I bought two of your babies (ZR-1) in Lebanon.
Carlos
Best of luck

Cliff Ravenscraft here from BitCast Media. We're about 90% complete with the design of the website, getting it ready for Dave's February 1st launch.

The Header image for the site is a "concept" rendition of the final product. The picture of Dave with the image is certain to stay, I'm waiting for final approval on the font used in the logo for Corvette Chief and as for the schematic in the background, tis is just there to show the "idea" for the background and we are actually in search of a "schematic" of a car engine as is used in the background of Dave's book "Corvette From The Inside."

In talking with Dave, I can assure you that the podcast will be quite interesting. However, in all my conversations with him, Dave hasn't mentioned anything about music to me.

I figured folks might pick up on the incorrect image in the background. This will make for a good "history/trivia" topic for CorvetteChief.com when Dave celebrates his 1st full year in podcasting in February, 2009.

Dave,
I'm really looking forward to hearing your thoughts. Your picture with the Corvette engine and what appears to be a schematic of a musical instrument keyboard in the background portend well for how interesting it's going to be.

Best of luck.

Each time I tell someone about the signature on my ZR-1 motor, an unexplainable smile must come to your face. Thanks for all you have done for the car's community and good luck with your podcast. We'll be watching.
